Read on to learn all about the great trophy hunting for Warthog in South Africa that we provide in Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga Provinces.
Black Wildebeest are a medium sized species of the pig family that live across most of South Africa. We hunt Warthog on our hunting areas in Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga Provinces. The hunting for Warthog is excellent on our hunting areas in Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces and we take some very nice Warthogs at both places.
Warthogs typically weigh around 100-250 pounds and stand two to three feet tall with males being slightly larger than females. They have sparse brown or black hair that covers their body. Additionally, Warthog have a long, thin tail that is hairless except for a small tuft at the end.
Their most notable feature is the skin growths that look like warts and grow on their face below their eyes. Both males and females have tusks, but the tusks on males are much larger and more prominent than the tusks on females. Females tend to have tusks that are thinner and curve inward while males tend to have tusks that are thicker and grow out and upward. Warthogs prefer to live in open savannas and sparsely wooded areas.
Best Cartridge For Hunting Warthog
Even though they are not particularly large animals, pound for pound, Warthog are relatively tough. With this in mind, we recommend the .308 Winchester (using premium 180gr bullets) as the minimum for trophy hunting Warthog. The .30-06 Springfield and .300 Winchester Magnum are also great choices. There is also nothing wrong with using something larger, such as the .375 H&H for trophy hunting Warthog in South Africa.
Warthog Shot Placement
The traditional shoulder shot is usually the best choice for hunting Warthog. When the animal is standing broadside, simply aim at the shoulder, about one third of the way up the body.
Make sure you adjust your aiming point accordingly if the Warthog is quartering towards or away from you (aim slightly forward if the animal is quartering towards you and slightly to the rear if the Warthog is quartering away).
Methods For Hunting Warthog
Virtually all of our Warthog are hunted via walk and stalk. Since they must drink water daily, they may be ambushed at a water hole as well and we occasionally take a few Warthog using this method as well.
Best Time Of Year For Hunting Warthog
Warthog may be hunted all year long. However, our best hunting for Warthog tends to be in the dry months of April through October when there is less vegetation and fewer water sources.
Average Trophy Size
Our average Warthog trophy measures 10-12”, though we occassionally take a few that are larger. Our biggest Warthog ever (photo below) easily qualified for an SCI gold medal and measured over 15”. This Warthog was hunted in July 2015 on our hunting area in Gauteng Province.
